Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Review: Is The Bona Spray Mop Any Good?

Sponsored by Bona.

With two boys under 5 at home, I spend much more time than I would like cleaning floors. Anything that can make that task a bit easier is a win in my book.
A few months ago my mum bought a Bona Spray mop. At the time I baulked at what seemed to be a lot of money for a mop, so I bought a cheap imitation assuming it would be the same. It wasn’t!
I recently got my very own Bona Spray Mop and it is a world apart from the cheap imitation I tried originally. I decided to put it to the test with my five tests of a good floor mop.

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner Review: Five tests for the Bona Spray Mop

When it comes to mops there are five things that a mop needs to be able to do to pass the test in my book. Here is how the Bona Spray Mop performed.

Bona Floor Mop Review One: Dried on Weet-bix

Combine an animated two year old and a bowl of mushy Weet-bix and you end up with quite a mess each morning. I’d like to be able to say that it’s always wiped from the floor the second that it lands there, but that’d be a lie. It doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I still end up finding dried on Weet-bix clinging to the floor hours later. Anyone who’s had some experience with dried on Weet-bix knows that it isn’t the easiest thing in the world to get off. If you try and scrape it, you risk damaging the floor, but a simple wipe does nothing!
Test number one for the Bona Spray mop was removal of dried on Weet-bix. I was probably a little ambitious and tried using just the microfiber mop head (with no spray) to start. A bit came off but there was still a residue.
Ok, time to get serious… I moved to the spray. Initially I was concerned it might not be going to budge but after spraying and leaving it for 30 seconds it slid off easily. Success! I also found that pushing the mop sideways was quite effective so this has become my go to technique.

Bona Floor Mop Review 2: Helpful toddlers

Mr 4 with the Bona spray mop

At what age does cleaning go from being fun to being a chore?

If an item can’t cope with the wrath of a toddler, it doesn’t last long in our house. The same goes for cleaning equipment.
One of the downfalls of the imitation mop I bought previously was that it just wasn’t robust enough. Bits snapped, things fell off and it couldn’t cope with the rigorous “helping” of a 4-year-old.
No such issue with the Bona Spray Mop. Even though it is light, it is super solid and has coped fine with being thrown all over the place by my boys. Mr 4 has actually become extremely proficient at using it and can reliably mop the living room! I just have to watch that he doesn’t get too enthusiastic with the spray 😉

Toddler test: PASS

Bona Floor Mop Review 3: No streaks

A couple of years ago we had beautiful bamboo flooring installed in our living areas. I love it but one thing I’ve noticed with the high gloss finish is that it shows streaks badly with certain products. Pretty much every floor cleaner I have tried leaves streaks and I end up having to buff them off with a microfiber cloth.
I was dubious as to whether the Bona Floor Cleaner would be any different as I thought it might just be a downfall of the high gloss surface. Bona sent me two different floor sprays, one designed for timber floors and one suited to laminate and tiles, so I figured I had it covered either way in terms of cleaning sprays.

Multiple options to suit your floor type.

I tried the Bona timber floor spray first, and after a bit of trial and error with the amount of spray I used, I was able to get a perfectly clean floor with NO STREAKS! Amazing. The secret for me was to not use too much spray. I basically only use a spray every few meters. The microfiber cloth stays slightly damp and that prevents streaks. Too much spray (hello Mr 4, I’m looking at you!) and you’ll end up with streaks.

Streaks test: PASS

Bona Floor Mop Review 4: Easy to use

I don’t have time for fussing around with buckets and steam powered mops. I need something quick and easy, and it’s also a plus if the kids can give it a go. I initially had a bit of trouble getting the mop together but once I checked out the video from Bona it was actually really simple. Once it’s together it is beyond easy to use. It comes with a cleaning bottle which clips in easily and can be refilled as needed. Mr 4 is also able (and willing) to use it, so that is a total win!

Easy of use test: PASS

I love the dusting head. It makes doing a quick sweep so easy!

My thoughts on the Bona Spray Mop System

Overall I’m really happy with the Bona Spray Mop. It’s getting a daily work out and even with that much use I’ve still got over 2/3 of the floor cleaning spray left plus the dusting attachment is awesome for a quick wipe over of the floors.

The Bona system is designed to offer a complete solution for both timber floors and other hard surface floor, such as stone, tile and laminates. The Australian distributor Ezi Floor also import quality timber flooring so it’s in their interest to work with a product that is safe and effective.

The idea behind the Bona Spray Mop and floor cleaners is to clean and protect your floors so they last longer. I’m certainly a fan and can now see why it’s worth spending a bit more on a quality mop!

The Bona Spray Mop and floor cleaners are available online and in various stores. You can find local distributors on their website here or the best prices on Amazon here.

If you’re going to do a test, the dried weet-bix test is the big one. That stuff is so hard to get off. I bought a norwex mop last year, but I’m fairly underwhelmed with it. Our neighbours gave us a steam mop, but I melted the varnish off the floors 🙁 Perhaps I should give your mop a go 🙂 #teamIBOT
