Children’s wardrobes can become a giant pit of mini clothes and lost socks in no time at all. Here I have some tips for organising the kids clothes and wardrobes.
Regularly clear it out
The biggest hurdle to keeping children’s clothes organised is making sure that what is in the wardrobe fits and the old outgrown stuff comes out. How many times have you dug around to find a top or pants only to pull out 15 items that are all a size to small.
Organise by type
I have my boys clothes in wire drawers, organised by type. I’ve chosen to group them as:
- Long tops
- Short tops
- Long pants
- Undies singlets and socks
By doing this it is really quick to pack everything away and you don’t need to dig through to find what you are looking for.
Ok, so as most of you know I’m a little label obsessed, but honestly, it is so helpful! I’ve labeled each of the drawers so anyone else who puts clothes away knows where they go. No excuses from husbands for squashing everything into one spot!
In my experience shelves are a nightmare when it comes to clothes storage. If shelves are your only option and you can’t convert them to drawers then don’t stack too much on each one and keep it all separated.
Unless you have heaps of wardrobe storage then it is a good idea to rotate seasons. The more you have in the cupboard, the harder it is to keep it all tidy. Store winter clothes in tubs during summer and swap them over for winter.
Stick to a colour palette
Ok so this might sound very “designer” of me, but if possible, try to buy clothes that all work together. I generally try to buy only plain bottoms so then they will go with any top. There are a few exceptions but on the whole this works well. The same goes for colours. Try to find a palette that works well and buy within it so most things match.
Don’t buy too much
Kids grow fast and it is easy to over buy certain items while neglecting others. Have a plan for how many of each item you need. I have two boys which I think makes it a bit easier than girls, but generally I try to have 7-10 pairs of pants, 10-12 tops, 3 jumpers, 5 pairs of pj’s, 10 pairs of socks, 2-3 pairs of shoes and 15 pairs of undies per season. My boys are young so may go through a couple of changes a day.
When they outgrow something or I need to replace an item I try to keep track of what they already have and buy within that. The less stuff you have the less you need to keep organised and tidy!
If you are after some more tips, you might also find this previous post I wrote on organising baby clothes helpful. It is applicable to older kids too.
