With three little ones in the house we have used our fair share of creams, lotions and bath products over the years. All of my kids have quite sensitive skin and two of them are prone to eczema, so I’m quite picky about what I use on their skin.
I’d heard of Itchy Baby Co. but never used it before, so when they approached me to give it a try I was interested to see what it was like. With a background in allied health I’m quite particular about evidence based claims, so the fact the products had solid research backing their formulations and had been developed by a pharmacist was appealing.
Itchy Baby Co. Ingredients
The bath products are made with natural colloidal oatmeal plus added goats milk and coconut in certain versions. Oatmeal is great to keep in moisture and avoid drying out delicate skin. Keeping skin well moisturised is one of the key ways to avoid and manage eczema so avoiding products that dry out the skin is ideal.
I had never tried any oatmeal based products before so I went and did some research on why it is so good for skin. A study in the Journal of Drugs and Dermatology outlined some of the main reasons why oatmeal is great for itchy and irritated skin. The Itchy Baby Co summarised the findings as follows:
“Oatmeal has been used for hundreds of years to soothe itchy and irritated skin conditions, such as eczema as well as chicken pox and insect bites.
How oatmeal helps itchy and irritated skin is all to do with oatmeal’s chemical structure:
1. Oatmeal can hold water and protect the skin because it is packed full of starches and beta-glucans
2. Oatmeal has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity through its many types of phenols
3. Oatmeal softens the skin because it has lots of cellulose and fibre.”
Itchy Baby Co. Review
I’ve found that most bath products leave my kids skin feeling tight and dry once I’ve dried them off. I definitely noticed that Itchy Baby Co didn’t do that at all. Where other products foam up and act like soap in the bath, the oatmeal soaks were really gentle and milky in the water. They were effective at cleaning my (filthy) preschooler but didn’t have that soapy feeling that seems to strip away moisture from skin.
The products don’t have a strong smell but the moisturiser does have a delicious subtle coconut scent to it which I personally love. Everything about them is gentle and natural and they left my kids skin feeling divine.
I really like the way they are packaged with a cute little wooden spoon to scoop the powder out into the bath. The package will last quite a while using 1-2 scoops in each bath and the moisturiser goes really far so I actually think they are quite good value given the quality of the ingredients used. The products do feel quite different to use from “regular” moisturisers and bath products (which goes to show all the added rubbish in most things to make them foamy and watery). I found the moisturiser was thicker than I was used to but it went much further on the skin and left a better moisture barrier than other products I had used. It can be a bit tricky to get out of the tube if its cold but once in the warmth of your hands it almost melts onto the skin and feels luscious. My bub certainly enjoyed the little massage!
