Earlier in the week, a reader who has been taking part in the 30 Day declutter challenge, wrote about how she couldn’t bring herself to throw out an old pair of boots that belonged to her late mother. I totally get this and it is something that will come up for many of you throughout the challenge.
It can be really hard to part with sentimental items and some things are just too precious to ever give up. I have a lovely friend who has sadly lost two babies, one to stillbirth and one to SIDS. She has some beautiful keepsake boxes for them and things like these are too valuable to ever part with.
When you are faced with this dilemma, consider if you could repurpose the item or keep just a part of it. In the case of the leather boots, perhaps it would be possible to have a small section of the leather turned into a key-ring or special bookmark. Maybe it could be fashioned into a necklace by braiding strips of the leather.
When it comes to sentimental items, the trick is keeping and storing them in a way that is special and gives them value and purpose. This may mean displaying them in a special way or incorporating them into things you use daily. The items themselves are not what is of value, but more the memories they represent. Displaying them can be a way to really give them a meaningful place in your home and there are some truly unique and beautiful ways to store precious keepsakes.
Here are some ideas for storing and displaying sentimental items
Children’s artworks, letters and school-work
It can be very hard to part with some of your children’s precious first drawings, cards, letters and precious creations, but if we kept everything, our homes would be overrun with mini Picasso pieces.
One of the best ways I have seen children’s arts and crafts stored is as beautiful coffee table books. Take photos of all the art, letters, cards, drawings and creations and then turn them into a photo book keepsake. These also make lovely gifts for grandparents!
Websites like Snapfish are great for affordable photo books. At the moment they are offering 50% off most products, including photo books, until the 8th of June. Bargain! Click here and use code MIDYEAR50
Here are some great ones!
Part of travelling is collecting all the fun little bits and pieces along the way. Foreign coins, admission passes, key-rings and random keepsakes. They hold so many memories! I love the way these ones have been transformed into gorgeous art using glass mason jars. So easy and so effective.
Another great idea are these great destination boxes for storing everything in. I love the way they are styled to fit in with the decor and keep everything in one spot.
Baby clothing, first shoes, hospital keepsakes
These can be made into beautiful shadow boxes and framed with photos of your baby. Also consider preserving just parts of items and repurposing them. Create artworks from gorgeous buttons or quilts from pieces of clothing.
