Working out how to reduce clutter in your home is one of the first steps towards having a tidy, organised home. This technique is one I use in my home to help reduce clutter and keep things where they belong. I am not naturally a very tidy person so this is a quick and easy way to keep the mess under control.
What are room buckets and why I love them!
So this may seem like a rather random sentence in an article about clutter but stick with me. Buckets are key.
Room buckets are simply medium flexible buckets, labeled with each room of your home. Purchase flexible ones that are reasonably large (but not so huge you have nowhere to store them). They should be able to stack inside each other and you need one for every main room in your home. I got mine from Kmart and we have a small home so only have ones for the living area, the bathroom, our room & each of the boys rooms. If you have a laundry, playroom, office, garage etc then you will need one for those too.
How to reduce clutter using your buckets.
At the end of each day collect your buckets and go through each room putting anythingthat doesn’t belong into the room bucket it should be in. If you are at home through the day then you may need to do this throughout the day. Once you’ve decluttered each room you can then put each bucket outside the room it belongs in and next time you enter that room you put away anything in the bucket.
Kids are great with this task and you can set a challenge where they can race each other to see who can fill their bucket first (just make sure you give them buckets for rooms that are likely to have equal amounts of random clutter around the house!)
You can also keep your buckets in each room and as you move around the house throughout the day you can pick up things that are not in their home and put them in the correct room bucket, ready to pack away at the end of the day. You can set a rule for the kids that they can put the toys they have finished playing with into their bucket but once the bucket is full they need to pack it away.
Room buckets work really well in our home, I hope you find them useful too!
