This week is so far not off to a good start for me. I’m sick, the boys are sick and the house is a bomb site. I REALLY don’t feel like tidying up and as a result, the chaos is getting out of hand. Yesterday I decided I needed to start somewhere and just do it.
Here are some ideas for keeping the house clean and tidy when you just can’t be bothered!
Make the bed
It’s a mental shift but you’ll feel better. Make the bed, open the blinds and let some fresh air in.
Group and contain
My husband used to think I was crazy when I would pull out the broom and sweep all the toys into a pile in the middle of the lounge room. Now he sees the genius in my actions and has been known to do the same.
If you have floorboards or tiles, grab a broom and sweep all the toys and mess into one spot. From here you can easily pick out any rubbish and group like things together (cars, books, dolls etc).
If all else fails you can dump the pile into a basket and deal with it tomorrow! At least your floors will be clear and you can start fresh.
Set a time limit
Set a timer and tidy hard for 10 or 15 minutes. Once you are done, stop, take a break or do something you enjoy. A few bursts of quick tidying is super effective at keeping the chaos contained. When you are feeling unmotivated, a speed tidy is an easy way to get stuff done.
Grab a garbage bag
If you can’t face anything else, grab a garbage bag, start at the front door and walk through each room chucking out anything that is rubbish.
Pick a room
If you are feeling overwhelmed and over it, choose a room (preferably the one that will have the biggest overall impact) and tidy it.
Tidy benches, remove rubbish, pick up things that don’t belong and take anything out of the room that is cluttering it. Obviously you can’t continually move things from room to room or you’ll end up with one almighty mess (hello garage or spare bedroom…I’m looking at you!) but some days are just too much to handle and this will get you through.
Speed clean the bathroom & kitchen
Give yourself ten minutes to stack washing up/put it in the dishwasher, wipe benches and give the floor a speed mop or sweep (those disposable floor wipes are awesome for this!)
Move to the bathroom and using flushable wipes, give the toilet and basin a quick wipe. Spray some cleaner in the toilet bowl, pick up any clothes and give the floor a wipe over with an old towel (or one that is about to go in the wash).
Sure, your house probably won’t look pristine but it will be a bit more under control and the chaos will remain contained.
If all else fails, grab a glass of wine, order take out and give in to the mess 😉
