You may not know it, but I do NOT like ironing. When I discovered that my sons school for next year has polo tops rather than shirts I was thrilled! No ironing. Winner!
Perhaps if I had a dedicated laundry room where I could have an ironing board set up I might feel differently.
Nah, who am I kidding, probably not.
I’m all about avoiding ironing and finding ways to iron less (or even better not at all!)
Here are my top tips to iron less!
Don’t shove too much in the wash
The more you pack in the washing machine the more tangled and creased everything gets. Try to pack loads loosely so clothes don’t get crumpled. It is also a good idea to wash heavier things separately to lighter things.
Hang clothes neatly and straight away
Always hang clothes straight away. Make sure you unravel sleeves and pants and hang everything neatly. You can even hang some clothes directly onto hangers to keep them in better shape.
Use the dryer (carefully)
The dryer can be a great way to decrease clothes, tablecloths and more. Make sure you don’t let things dry completely, remove them when touch dry and hang up. If you need something quickly and don’t have an iron handy, spritz it with water and then throw in the dryer for 5-10 minutes. It will reduce wrinkles dramatically.
Fold straight away
Whether you are using a dryer or taking things from the line, fold everything as you go. If you pull it off and throw it in a basket you can pretty much guarantee it will need ironing. Try to fold as you go and you’ll avoid extra crinkles.
Choose wrinkle free clothes
Pure cotton tends to wrinkle easily. Choose clothes with some synthetic component such a mix of cotton and lycra in tops, to keep clothes wrinkle free without ironing.
Buy a steamer
Ok, so I don’t actually own one of these but I saw a fabulous article on one last week. Next time I’m at Kmart I’ll be taking a serious look! Steamers apparently can effectively “iron” your clothes while they hang on their hangers. No ironing board. No fiddly positioning. No badly placed creases. Now that sounds like my kind of ironing.
When all else fails?
Suck it up and iron it 😉 This pretty much goes for all shirts and dress pants. If you find an alternative, let me know!
