Over the past few weeks, some of you have replied to my emails with questions for me. I’m stoked that you want to get to know me a bit more personally, so here I’ll answer a few of your questions (& a couple of others).
So… get to know me
Who am I?
Hi, I’m Michelle! That’s me just there. I’m the face behind the site and I write everything on it. I’ve got two little boys, aged four and nearly two. I’m married to a wonderful, helpful husband who works full time as a scientist.
By profession I’m a Paediatric Audiologist (hearing in kids) but I’ve taken some extended leave since having my second son. I also run a small local magazine on the Northern Beaches of Sydney where I live.
Where am I from?
I’m from Sydney, Australia. I live on the beautiful Northern Beaches where I grew up. My husband also grew up here so we are lucky enough to have both families still near by.
Why did I start this blog?
Initially the blog started as a Facebook page and newsletter (come over & join me on Facebook if you don’t already!). I then started putting stuff on a website and before I knew it, it had turned into a blog. I actually knew nothing about blogs before this and wasn’t a reader of blogs, but I’ve made many lovely friends in the process. It is a great little community!
What does our home look like, is it always clean and tidy?
This one makes me laugh, hysterically! I have two boys under four and run two businesses… so NO, our home is most certainly NOT always tidy. It is always clean. I find it easier to keep on top of cleaning routines with a bit of speed cleaning and a daily routine, but the mess factor is a constant battle with a young family. There are almost always toys about and the washing is endless.
We live in a fairly small duplex, we’ve got one combined living/dining/kitchen area and this makes it difficult to keep mess under control with the kids. It has improved since we moved them into one bedroom and have been using the other as a play room. At least I can contain the chaos! I am by no means perfect and that’s part of why I love this blog. We can work at staying organised together 🙂
What household task do you hate most?
I really don’t enjoy washing up (or loading the dishwasher). It all kind of gross and just not my thing. I’d prefer to clean the toilet (yep, I’m weird). Luckily my husband doesn’t mind so much so he’s never cleaned the bathroom and I don’t do many dishes. It’s a good deal.
What is your best advice for keeping a clean and tidy house?
This one I’m going to answer in two ways. Firstly, my best advice in regards to a clean and tidy house is to do small things consistently and put things away straight away. But, often when people ask this question they are wanting their house tidy for visitors… My best advice in this area would be to remember that people come to see YOU not your HOME. Keep it clean (no one wants to hang out in a filthy home), but don’t let untidiness stop you from having people over.
What is your best budgeting advice?
This one is easy. Automate! Set aside savings each week or fortnight for all expenses automatically. It takes so much of the stress out of managing a budget as you always know the money is there when a bill comes.
What are your go to weeknight meals?
I love my slow cooker and I like to pre-cook and freeze things to easily pull out. We are often a steak and three veg family so that’s probably my easy ‘go to’ meal. Meal planning also helps enormously. I send these out each week so sign up to the newsletter if you aren’t already.
What does a day in my life look like?
It varies a lot, but generally we are up around 7.15/7.30am (my kids used to be super early risers but have recently started sleeping in!!) I feed me and the boys breakfast, finish off lunch boxes (if it is a kindy day for Mr 4), grab a quick shower (while trying to stop Mr 1 joining me) and get everyone dressed. Washing on (if hubby hasn’t already) or hung out.
Kindy drop off and then playgroup or other activities. Mr 1 also has a couple of appointments each week with speech pathologists, OT’s or physios so we fit these in on some mornings. Morning tea, lunch etc etc. Home around lunchtime for Mr 1’s sleep. While he sleeps I work, write posts, do newsletters, work on the magazine and generally try to fit a full time job into two hours.
Once Mr 1 is up we’ve got kindy pick up, any chores or shopping and then afternoon tea. Mr 4 is usually pretty exhausted after kindy so generally he and Mr 1 will play while I prep dinner, do a quick tidy up, sweep floors and do any other housework that needs doing.
My husband gets home around 6.30 (although sometimes as early at 5pm or after 7pm) so dinner for everyone is around that time. I usually take some time out and he catches up with the kids. Bath time and into PJ’s
I read stories and lie with Mr 4 while he goes to sleep and hubby puts Mr 1 down. After the kids are in bed we catch up, I do some more work while hubby does dinner dishes and then we watch some TV together (we are totally in love with Elementary, Black List, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Mentalist).
Before bed I do a quick bathroom speed clean, pick up any stray clothes and prep anything for the next day. Into bed around 10/10.30pm and I’ll check social media, schedule anything I need to and then off to sleep.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Ok, so no one actually asked me this (that would maybe be a bit weird and stalkerish…) but I thought I would share! 😉
I really love Hamilton Island. It is such a kid friendly holiday spot plus you can get self contained units which make it quite affordable. I also loved travelling in South East Asia before kids, and I’d love to do a trip back there while the kids are young. Greece is also on my list of places I would love to go but I don’t think it will be in the budget for a while yet!
I hope you feel like you know me a bit better. Leave any other questions you have in the comments and I’ll add them in 🙂
