This is the full dish’d review in detail but if you just want a quick overview with the pro’s and con’s, skip to the end 😉
This week I’ve been trying out some of the offerings from dish’d food store. I can’t say that I’m usually a huge fan of frozen meals and I try to make sure I have a stockpile of pre-cooked frozen meals ready to go. The reality is though, that life happens and sometimes it isn’t possible to produce a home cooked meal.
Over the last few weeks we’ve been away, we’ve been sick and I’ve been crazy busy launching the new magazine. When I was approached to review some of the dish’d meals I jumped at the chance to take a break from cooking! I was initially unsure about what to expect but after looking through the website I became quite excited about my meals arriving.
The way dish’d works is that you order online from either full meals totally cooked and ready to go from the freezer whenever you need or meal components such as meats, frozen steam veggies and rice dishes that you combine to form a meal. I ordered quite a variety and after spending $100 I had quite a haul to load into the freezer. I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived the next day (!) packed neatly in an insulated box. I wasn’t home when they were delivered but received an SMS to tell me they were at the front door. I couldn’t get home for another six hours and was a little worried they would have defrosted by then, but they were perfect. All packed in dry ice and still frozen solid!
We haven’t had a chance to eat all of the dishes yet but these are a few I have tried…
Prawn Pad Thai
The size of the serving here is great and my husband absolutely loved it. He said it would make a perfect work lunch and he was a huge fan. It does look just like it is shown on the box and my only complaint is that I found it a bit spicy. I love pad thai and the kids will usually eat it but this one had a bit too much kick for me personally. Overall though, it is a really great value and high quality dish.
Crispy Vegetable Dim Sum’s
These were awesome!! They turned out absolutely perfectly and I would buy them in an instant for a dinner party or as finger food for a cocktail party. The little potato spun balls are just gorgeous and the quality was impeccable. They tasted just like you would get fresh from the local Thai restaurant which I found pretty impressive.
Giant Squid skewers
These are amazing value for money with 12 for just $7.95. The certainly look great but I found they were a bit on the chewy side. Squid can be difficult to cook at the best of times and these didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped. They were still tasty but when served next to the amazing dims sums they just didn’t quite match up. They would still be a good option for finger food at a party and it may be that pan frying yields a better result (I put them in the oven).
Hake en papillote
I was a little nervous about microwaved fish but boy did this come through with the goods. This was possibly my favourite dish. It was perfectly cooked, moist, full of flavour and looked exactly like it did on the box. YUM!! I will be getting this as a last minute dinner option to keep in the freezer for sure.
I saved the best for last! This was incredible. The raspberries were just so lush and it presented beautifully. I took it as a dessert to a Christmas event and it looked perfectly at home sitting amongst the other home-made options. It is amazing value and just stunning. It would make the perfect Christmas dessert and judging by the fact it is sold out online at the moment (check again soon) it must be super popular!
Overall I have to say I was pretty impressed. I will order again for sure.
A quick Overview…

- Snap frozen and cooks easily, keeping all its nutritional value
- Good portion sizes
- I found the website a little complicated to navigate
- Some of the meals had a bit more spice to them than I was expecting (just a personal preference)
