So school holidays are here and whether you are celebrating or silently (or not so silently) dreading them, you are probably after some great free school holiday activities. I’ll be publishing another list next week but this should keep you going for the week!
1. Create a themed dinner with the kids
Get them to come up with a theme and then research food and decorations to bring it to life. Maybe you could have a mexican night or a superhero dinner party? Get them to come up with suggestions and then spend the day baking and making decorations. Not only will it keep them entertained it is a great family bonding activity.
2. Plant a vegetable garden
Ok so this isn’t totally free but it can be pretty cheap. A few packets of seeds and some potting mix shouldn’t set you back much more than $10. Spring is a great time to plant a veggie garden plus it can teach kids about healthy eating (and get them trying new healthy foods) and it keeps them out in the fresh air. On the plus side, tending to the garden should help keep them occupied over the next couple of weeks as they watch the first sprouts emerge!
3. Host a play date
Kids entertain each other and often having a friend over can be less hassle than entertaining them on your own. Plus, hopefully they will return the favour and you can enjoy a kid free day (if you can line up all the play dates at once, which I highly recommend!)
4. Make sock puppets
If you house is like mine you are likely to have 5 (or 50) unmatched socks lying about. Use them to make awesome sock puppets and then get the kids to put on puppet shows.
5. Set a photo challenge
Write up a list of things the kids need to take photos of (be creative, get them to take photos that represent something such as happiness, family, fun, freedom, nature etc) and then spend the day hunting down great photo opportunities. You can then get them all printed out into a photo book. You’ll be amazed at what kids come up with!
Have a lovely week with the kiddies, I’d love to know what you are up to. Tell me in the comments xx
